Measuring & Installation

Terminology

  • Reveal – This is the section of door or window frame that sits at right angles to the door or glass. Reveal fit places the mesh at right angles to the Velcro® brand fastener creating a peel strength.
  • Face – This is the section of door or window frame that is facing you. A Face fit places the mesh on the same plane to the Velcro® brand fastener creating a shear strength. Face fit gives a superior hold. Please see sketch below.

 face-reveal-diagram

  • Sill – This is the bottom part of a window frame and usually forms a shelf-like part (reveal.)
  • Unfinished measurement – The measurement of the opening of the door or window (see above.) This does not include the Velcro® tape to attach the screen to the frame (we add this to your measurements if you select “unfinished measurements.”)
  • Finished measurement – We manufacture the screens to your exact measurements supplied, this means you have included the Velcro® allowance.

Measuring for doors

  • Decide where you want to stick the VELCRO® brand fastener for your door screen. The sides of the door screen fix with a continuous strip of 13mm (0.5″) Velcro ® and the top with a continuous strip of 25mm (1″) Velcro ®.
  • You can fix the door screen to the face or reveal of the frame. The face of the frame is the section of frame which is facing you, reveal is the section of frame which is at right angles to the face, see sketch below. Face fit gives a superior hold over reveal fit.

  • Measure the opening (this is the space within the frame, see above) – from top to bottom and left to right, we call this “UNFINISHED” size. We add on the VELCRO® allowance of 13mm to each side and 25mm for the top to your given measurements. Example; if you measured the opening at 1200mm wide x 2200mm high we would add 26mm to the width and 25mm to the height. Your door screen would be made to measure 1226mm wide x 2225mm high.
  • Alternatively, you can give us the “FINISHED” size, this is inclusive of the VELCRO® allowance of 13mm to each side and 25mm for the top fix. Example; if you measured 1226mm wide x 2225mm high your door screen would be made to measure 1226mm wide x 2225mm high.
  • Select finished or unfinished when ordering so we know if we need to add on for the Velcro® allowance.
  • We recommend using 25mm width Velcro® for the side fix of both large and reveal fit door screens, this gives better anchorage. Standard size, face fit doors only require 13mm for the side fix.
  • Each Flexiscreens® door screen comes with one magnetic closure only, this is placed central by default unless you choose otherwise. If you want it offset let us know in the comments box ie 400mm from LHS on side of installation.
  • If you have a large door opening and you need more than 1 magnetic closure use the comments box; enter quantity and where you want them, extra magnetic closures are $70 each.
  • All screens are custom made meaning you can have any size or configuration of magnetic closures you fancy!

Measuring for windows

  • Decide where you want to stick the VELCRO® brand fastener for your window screen, the 4 sides fix with 13mm (0.5″)  VELCRO® brand fastener to your frame.
  • You can fix the window screen to the face or reveal of the frame. The face of the frame is facing you, reveal is the section of frame which is at right angles to the face, see sketch below.

  • Measure the opening (this is the space within the frame, see above) – from top to bottom and left to right, this is called “UNFINISHED” size. We add on the VELCRO® allowance of 13mm to each side. Example; if you measured the opening at 250mm wide x 250mm high we would add 26mm to the width and 26mm to the height. Your Flexiscreens would be made measuring 276mm wide x 276mm high.
  • Alternatively, you can give us the “FINISHED” size, this is inclusive of the VELCRO® allowance of 13mm for each side. Example; if you measured 250mm wide x 250mm high we would make your window screen to this exact measurement.
  • Select finished or unfinished when ordering so we know if we need to add on for the VELCRO® allowance.
  • Reveal fit screens sit neatly within the frame, almost like looking into a lid of a shoe box.
  • Pull tabs are always positioned vertically by default unless you choose horizontally. Each screen has 2 tabs placed at the bottom of the screen to operate your fly screen, you can cut off if not required.

Measuring for odd shapes

We enjoy trying to come up with solutions for our customer’s screening needs.

Templates can be provided where an accurate measurement is hard to obtain.

A photo of the window or door in question can be emailed to us, we can then draw on it showing you where to measure from and where the screen will attach.

Installation

Our easy to follow instructions make for an easy DIY installation.

  • Ensure the surface of the frame is sound i.e. no flaking or bubbling paint.
  • All porous surfaces must be sealed i.e. raw timber, brickwork or concrete. These surfaces continually leach moisture and natural oils which hinder the glues performance.
  • Some paint manufacturers use Teflon as a surface protector – if so you will need to sand your frame lightly with Wet & Dry to make a key for the glue. The same goes for some powder coated frames.
  • PVC frames can be laminated, this interferes with the glues performance. Velcro recommend a product called Septone from your auto shop, use it as a pre – wash before installation.
  • Clean the surface of your frame to remove contaminants like dust, grease, oil.
  • Use the alcohol swabs provided as a final wipe to ensure that the surfaces are spotless, allow to completely dry.
  • New paint must be fully cured, follow manufacturers instructions for curing times. Paint vapours inhibit the strong performance of the glue.
  • Install the self adhesive Velcro® onto clean, dry surfaces only, at room temp. of 18°C or higher in non-humid conditions. If temperatures are low warm frame and Velcro® with hair dryer/fan heater to increase the bond.
  • Do not touch the adhesive with fingers and ensure your scissors are sharp and clean.
  • Do not pre-cut Velcro® and attach to the screen; attach directly to window frame, one side at a time and cut.
  • Hold the Velcro® on the sides between your thumb and forefinger, peel back release liner without touching the glue to about 25mm (1″) and place in position. (See picture on left below.) Continue down one side of the frame peeling back liner as you go, cut with clean scissors once side is finished. Proceed with the other sides of frame.
  • Apply pressure to the whole strip of installed Velcro® with a Stanley knife handle or teaspoon, (See picture on right below.) Pressure activates the Pressure Sensitive Glue, pay special attention to the corners as these often get missed.
  • The Velcro® will fall away from the frame if pressure is not applied sufficiently, it cannot be reused if this happens. The Velcro® cannot be re-positioned either if you make a mistake, start again with new Velcro® ensuring that you have not left any traces of glue behind and the surface is spotless.
  • Resistance to edge peeling can be improved by nipping or rounding the corner of Velcro®
  • Mitre Velcro® tape for curves and butt join for square corners, please see sketch below.
  • Allow 24hrs. for the glue to cure thoroughly before installing your screen. We know you want to install your Flexiscreens straight away but you will thank us for waiting.
  • All folds in your screens will fall out, no need to worry.
  • If the corners lift this is an indication that the Velcro® has been contaminated during installation, alternatively there hasn’t been enough pressure applied this can be resolved with a drop of super glue.
